CUSP, the Community Ultrasound Program, trains doulas, community navigators, reproductive justice advocates, and clinicians in underserved regions to provide early pregnancy ultrasounds.
Our goal: To ensure people considering or seeking abortion services have information to make decisions about pregnancy options — without coercion or bias.
-
Doulas, community navigators, and reproductive justice advocates who live in an underserved region, already work with people seeking abortion care, and want to provide affordable, accessible ultrasound services for those who need them.
Clinicians living in underserved regions, willing to provide affordable, timely ultrasound — but lack training, experience, or a hand-held device.

After training, you will have skills to accurately measure early pregnancies, and share with clients what the ultrasounds shows: is the pregnancy in the uterus? How many weeks does it measure? Fellows learn how to tell what is normal after taking abortion pills and what is abnormal (and if abnormal, where to help the client get medical advice).
This training does NOT train on diagnostic ultrasounds, how to interpret pathology, how to accurately diagnose ectopic pregnancy, or lead to any formal certification.

Training can take 2-6 months to complete, depending on the speed of the learner, and how quickly we can arrange in-person training.
Initial self-study takes about 5-10 hours.
Virtual coaching takes about 6-10 hours.
In-person training is variable, depending on the volume of the site and the experience of the learner.
As long as you are using the program-owned probe, we require quarterly anonymous reports about client volume. Incentives for reporting are available for the first year.

Fellows can reach clinicians and the Repro Health Hotline for live video and still image review, follow-up support and clinical back-up when they need it: (844) 737-7644
